Escondido SPCA Burned

January 20, 2001
San Diego, California, USA

More than 100 shelter animals were killed in the deadly fire that completely destroyed the Escondido SPCA Saturday.  Animal control officers and rescuers rushed to save over 85 of the dogs, rabbits and other pets, however the majority of the shelter's 200 animals perished or were lost.

"They could just try to get out as many animals as they could," said County Animal Control officer Carrie Hoff.  The blaze and smoke were so intense that fire fighters were surprised at any survivors at all.  Many animals were immediately treated for severe burns and smoke inhalation at the Acacia Animal Hospital.

The Escondido SPCA is calling for $3.5 to $5 million in donations required to rebuild the facility.  The Acacia Animal Hospital, where some of the more critically injured animals are being treated, is also accepting donations and volunteers to help with the situation.  The hospital can be reached at (760) 745-8115.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
