Puppy's Torturer Still At Large

January 27, 2001 Dallas, TX

Although Loco the East Dallas puppy is home and on his way to recovery, the attacker who gouged out the dog's eyes with a pen or pencil earlier this month still remains at large.  The puppy has been left permanently blind, but is beginning to show signs of trust again, thanks to the outpour of kindness from people in the community as well as nationwide.

"Little bits of his old personality are showing. He has started playing with us a little more ... like rolling over on his back so you can rub his tummy.  He hadn't done that since he came home", said owner Greg Autry.

Emotions ranging from anger to sympathy to horror have been stirred nationwide, and support has been offered in letters, phone calls and $6,000 in donations to help pay for medical expenses, as well as over $35,000 donated to a reward fund to help catch the person or persons responsible for the attack.

Mr. Autry had let Loco out into the fenced back yard on January 5.  Loco disappeared for four days and finally turned up on the porch with massive eye wounds.  Apparently he had found his way back using his sense of smell.

Despite the growing reward fund, police said they have no leads in the case. If you have any information at all, please contact the Dallas Police Department at (214) 670-4414 or Operation Kindness at 972-418-PAWS (7297).
