Dog To Testify Against 58¢ Thief |
March 31, 2001 David Laman doesn't see anything funny about the case. Two years ago he was coming out of the shopping center when he saw accused thief Michael Monroe sitting behind the wheel of his [Mr. Laman's] SUV. When Mr. Laman approached, Monroe jumped out and drove off in his own car. Upon entering the SUV, Mr. Laman found 58 cents missing. Sasha the Rottweiler was a witness. She has been subpoenaed by the defense lawyer Regina Lynch who claims her client Michael Monroe didn't do it. "Yes, I subpoenaed a dog," says Ms. Lynch. She intends to show the jurors that Sasha is so big and ferocious that no one in his right mind would have tried to break into the SUV, in which Sasha had been reposing at the time. James Janci, attorney for the prosecution is concerned that Sasha's presence will turn the proceedings into "a circus".

The trial, which began Monday, continues at a cost of $650 per hour. Says victim David Laman, "It's about the principle of breaking into someone's car."
