Thanks, Hadil!

The original Owney became the mascot of the U.S. Railway Mail Service in 1888 after he appeared in a pile of mail bags at the Albany Post Office.

No one knows where he came from, nor how he got his name, but Owney grew up to be one of the world's most famous and adventurous dogs.

Owney loved the scent of mailbags—so much that he would go wherever the bags went.  Starting with nothing more than a tag that read: "Owney, Post Office, Albany, New York", he traveled across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Alaska, collecting various trinkets and tokens that postal clerks would attach to his collar.

He even sailed to Japan several times, where the baffled Japanese interpreted his adornments to be medals of great honor and prestige.  They issued Owney an Imperial Passport, which allowed him to continue his travels around the globe, 143,000 miles in all.

The stuffed toy Owney that Hadil mentioned is a tribute to the original Owney.  Though it'll take him a while to catch up, "Owney Too" has been jumping between schools in the USA since 1998, collecting trinkets and tokens offered by the kids.
