Courageous Cat Thrashes Dog Food Thieves |
May 2, 2001 Derbyshire, UK Early this week a couple of burglars got a painful dose of dramatic irony that left them embrangled, embittered and doubtlessly embarrassed. Editor's note: Add "embayed" to the list, too. It looks like police will be able to catch them based on the blood samples they left at the scene of the crime. Some time this past weekend, two people broke into a Derbyshire warehouse with criminal intent. Their master scheme: steal the dog food. What happened next is somewhat unclear, and if I did know, I'd probably be laughing too hard to type. But Sunday morning when warehouse owner Mike Powell showed up, he found the place in a disarray, a few bags of dog food missing, streaks of (human) blood and one very haughty cat. Bonnie the cat was slightly injured, but victorious nonetheless, as Mr. Powell describes, she was "sore with fur everywhere, but you could see from the scene the intruders had it much worse." Further police investigations turned up two distinct traces of human blood and several other items of evidence that will likely lead to the crooks' apprehension. |
The police have surmised the following drama: A gang of at least two thieves was attempting to steal several tons of dog food from the warehouse. They had loaded only a few bags onto their truck when Bonnie, a six-year-old tortoiseshell, spotted them on her nightly prowl. She pounced on them, a scuffle ensued, and at least two wounded burglars fled the scene, covered in their own blood. Said Mr. Powell, who has been saved a fortune in dog food, "Bonnie’s a real beauty and worth her weight in gold. You don’t need a guard dog with a tiger like her about."
