Dog Wanders the Subway from Great Portland to Farringdon Station

May 10, 2001 London, UK

At 6:36pm yesterday, the height of rush hour, an adventurous dog rushed past the guards at the Great Portland Street Station and into the tunnel serving the London Underground.

Immediately, the authorities switched off all electricity to the rails and shut down the three adjoining Tube lines: Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan.

Passengers were reportedly stranded for approximately 20 minutes while the dog made its way to Farringdon station, where the dog's guardian was waiting.

It is not known whether or not the dog had paid for a ticket.

This dramatic incident, which resulted in no injuries, puts the London Transport in 1st place for The Scoop's "Dog-Friendliest Transit Authority of the Year" award, although the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (Berlin Transport Corporation) is riding at a close second (read "Dog Leaps onto Tracks, Berlin Underground Shuts Down").

Trailing abysmally in last place is the Chicago Transit Authority which reportedly ordered a train to drive over an injured dog last month.
