Lumpy the Dog Saves Two Drowning Men

May 12, 2001
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

A father-and-son canoeing team found themselves in dire straits when their vessel capsized in the middle of a Peterborough lake yesterday.

Brian Ensoll, 47, and his son Ryan, 21, were plunged into the cold lake waters without their life-preservers.

A local dog named Lumpy spotted them from shore and began barking furiously.  Upon investigating the commotion, Lumpy's guardians descried the drowning men and immediately telephoned 911, alerting rescue authorities.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to pull both men to safety.  Brian and Ryan Ensoll were treated for hypothermia and have since recovered fully.

Dramatically reenacting the scene, this is Corky who agreed to pose for Scoop photographers instead.  Corky is a Golden Retriever mutt.  To adopt Golden Retriever mutts, click here.
