Be-Kind-to-Animals-Week... How'd We Do?

Monday, May 14, 2001 - USA, JAPAN & OCEANIA

The week that just ended, May 6-12, was Be Kind to Animals Week sponsored by the American Humane Association.  Thanks to all those who, whether explicitly or wontedly, participated in promoting the appreciation of animal life.

How did we do?  Well, I suppose you could say it was a success; we still have a few animals left alive.

Of course, last week did bring to our attention several, notable bright spots.  Let's do them first, and then I'll give you plenty of time to change the channel before we get to the sicko stuff.

Highlights

  • 12-year-old Shannon Watt of Westminster, Maryland campaigned, washed cars, found sponsors and painted fences to raise the money necessary to procure bullet-proof vests for five police dogs.  The sixth-grader vows to continue until every Maryland police dog is vested.  Says Ms. Watt, "Every dog deserves to be protected.  The police dogs help protect us and they should have protection too."

  • Elizabeth Keller and "Miracle" of Glenwild Animal Rescue Corporation, New York, visited dozens of schools and brought the message of animal-kindness to the youths of Northeast USA (read the May 11 article, "Buried Alive Mutt Comes Out on Top").

  • Naked maniac James Matherson, seeking to "enter the Kingdom of God" by obeying demons that sent him on a rampage, destroyed houses, wrecked cars, urinated on a Church and seriously injured a 28-year-old woman who was walking her dog in Denver last Thursday, but he left the woman's dog Molly alone (so I guess you can't accuse him of violating Be Kind to Animals Week).  Molly, pictured at left, found her way home and now visits her 28-year-old guardian Jessica Fulcher in the hospital regularly, offering her encouragement and kisses.  Photo: Denver Post).

Now, for the sicko stuff.  If you can make it through the rest of this article in one sitting, you've got me beat (no vodka allowed; that's cheating)...

Lowlights

  • In Takatsuki, Osaka, Japan, an unknown attacker cut the paws and ears off of four young puppies and dumped them in Yodogawa Riverside Park last week.  Reports the Mainichi Daily News, "Their paws and ears appeared to have been severed with a cutter knife or scissors, and an animal protection group in Osaka Prefecture said it is considering filing a complaint with police..."

  • Vince Morton from Orlando, Florida admitted to pouring a fatal dose of acid on a neighbor's dog.  The dog, a Jack Russell Terrier, was euthanized after sustaining severe acid burns.  Brenna O'Hara, the dog's 9-year-old guardian, told reporters, "I just wanted to say thank you to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office in helping find the person who hurt my dog."

  • A man in South Aukland, New Zealand taped a terrier's mouth shut and beat the animal with a claw hammer on Friday (wow, if he'd just waited one more day, it wouldn't have happened during Be Kind to Animals Week).  The dog suffered massive head injuries and had to be euthanized, reports the New Zealand Herald.

  • In Romania last week... (sigh).

  • A witch-hunt in Queensland, Australia has resulted in the shooting deaths of 28 dingoes out of the estimated 160 native dogs living on Frazer Island.  A panic resulted after a boy was allegedly killed by wild dogs near a remote campsite at Waddy Point last month.  Queensland Premier Peter Beattie intends to continue killing the wildlife until... well, gosh, until he feels like stopping, I guess.  Note to Mr. Beattie: you're going to run out of dingoes first.  Maybe you ought to do crocodiles; I hear they're pretty mean, too.

Oops, I see that I've just tripped the cynic-o-meter.  Time for my medication.
