Anonymous 'Rich Man' Steps In to Save Romania's Strays

Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - ROMANIA

BUCHAREST — Romania has been long overdue for some good news.  Unbelievable as it sounds, they may have just gotten some.

Corneliu Vadim Tudor, a senator and President of the country's right-wing movement, the Greater Romania Party (PRM), has reportedly made the astonishing announcement that he will "adopt" 70,000 of the capital city's stray dogs in order to save them from painful deaths.

The Portuguese Publico newspaper yesterday published an interview with Senator Tudor in which the politician stated that 20,000 acres of land had been given him by "a rich man".  These 20,000 acres (that's two-thirds the size of Walt Disney World) would serve as the foundation for a stray dog refuge on the outskirts of Bucharest.

Senator Tudor has loudly opposed Mayor Traian Basescu's decision to exterminate all stray dogs.  For the past few months, Mr. Tudor has led many public demonstrations and (peaceful) protests regarding the current government's handling of the situation.

"I love dogs. In my house I have 17," the interview quotes him as saying.

As this stunning announcement has just been made yesterday, comments and reactions of Romanian citizens and officials are not yet available.

Last week The Scoop received a letter from Mayor Traian Basescu explaining the situation and highlighting where help is needed as well as where it is not.

This letter, along with various defending and attacking comments from Romanian authorities will be published Wednesday in The Scoop.

By that time we also hope to bring you a statement from Corneliu Vadim Tudor as well.
