Postcards from Woofstock

Thursday, May 17, 2001 - USA

HONOLULU, HI — Woofstock.  The show was packed with longhairs; they were singing and dancing and howling; they were stage-diving. As you'd expect, the crowd was wild.

It was all part of the program, and everyone had a great time—even the humans.  Last month's "Woofstock" was probably the largest canine spectacle to grace the 132 islands of the South Seas.

Benefiting the Hawaiian Humane Society and co-arranged and sponsored by Purr-fect Paws Premiere Pet Boutique, this eclectic event featured as the highlight of the evening a four-footed fashion show (as announced in last month's article "Ex-Shelter Dogs Strut Their Stuff").

Today we're pleased to share with you a few choice photographs sent to us by Purr-fect Paws.  Hose down the runway, here we go...

What's Woofstock without tie-dyes and neon green t-shirts?  Pictured above is Kawa, a White Finnish Spitz who showed up at the Humane Society, abandoned and half-hairless.  What a comeback!

Coquettish little Rambo (something about that phrase doesn't sound quite right) is a Papillon sporting a frontpack-style carrier, for those ex-shelter dogs who are now too chic to walk on the sidewalk.

Patch, a Pit Bull mutt (foreground), and Abby, a Dalmatian (background) modeled a reflective vest and a silky, red Mae West dress, respectively, showing us that safety and slinky can go paw-in-paw.  Abby had been rescued once as a pup by veterinarian Jennifer Parker, who saved her after she was hit by a truck.  Dr. Parker again saved the pooch from death when Abby's recent family decided to have her euthanized for staining the furniture.  Abby & Dr. Parker were a happy addition to the festivities.

And how about those times you take your surfin'-dog to the beaches of Hawaii to hang ten (or is it twenty? Never mind); don't forget a "fido float", worn here by Daisy the Sheltie.  The fido float increases a dog's endurance in the water, enabling the canine to travel great distances in search of geese (she'll need it if she's looking in Hawaii).  Daisy was rescued two days before Christmas in 1999.
