Police Called to Break Up Fight Between Dog and Cow

Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - GERMANY

ERBACH — Someone just handed me this urgent newsflash from Polizeipräsidium Südhessen.  It's in German.

Now, to say that my German's "a little rusty" would be the equivalent of saying that Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo from Fantasy Island) is "a little out of practice with his slam-dunk."

But in keeping with The Scoop's unflagging commitment to bringing you the world's dog news, I'll try to make some sense of it.  ...Funny, though; I seemed to understand it a lot better before someone told me that I was holding it upside-down.

Südhessen District police were called in to restore order after a brawl broke out late last week in Erbach, Germany.  The fight was between a dog and a cow (or maybe it was a deer; I can't remember which is which).

The boisterous bovine (or belligerent bambi) had been menacing passers-by for several days, seemingly without provocation.  On Friday, the animal escaped from its enclosure and lunged at a woman and her dog whom she was taking for a walk.

The attacking beast cornered the dog and began to whip the dog with its tail (wait a minute—that can't be right...  Oh, just go along with it).

The woman saw that she could not help the dog herself, so she called the police.

"Are you talkin' to me?"

Police and park rangers arrived on the scene and managed to break up the ruckus.  They were quite shocked at the animal's aggression and were initially rather confused.

But upon closer investigation, they found that the cow (deer) had recently given birth to a calf (fawn), and was fiercely defending the newborn against anything that approached.

The dog was treated for injuries at a veterinary hospital.

Phew, that wasn't so bad, was it?  Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go translate this article for The Scoop French edition.  Man, do I feel sorry for them!
