Zombie Dog Comes Back from the Grave

Wednesday, May 24, 2001 - USA

or...

PARK HILLS, MO — In a small town in Missouri Monday night, a small, black dog literally came back from the grave and probably shocked a few people half to death.

"Sweetie" had been hit by a mail delivery truck earlier that day and her lifeless body was found sprawled across the pavement near the family's mailbox.  Upon learning of the tragedy, guardian Glenda Stevens ran to her beloved pet but was unable to detect a heartbeat.

Ms. Stevens sadly dug a grave and buried Sweetie within. But several hours later, the woman looked outside and saw two hind legs sticking out of the ground.

Editor's note: Why does a Monty Python skit keep coming to mind:

Mrs. Premise:
Busy? I just spent four hours burying the cat.

Mrs. Conclusion:
Four hours to bury a cat?

Mrs. Premise:
Yes—it wouldn't keep still!

Sweetie, who had either been mistakenly presumed dead or mysteriously recalled to life, was attempting to dig her way out of the tomb.  She was taken to the vet, who told Ms. Stevens that the dog had suffered a broken front leg and a broken jaw, suggesting that it would be best to put the dog to sleep.

But after seeing the pooch's posthumous persistence (or perhaps fearing the wrath of Frankendog), Ms. Stevens refused to have the dog euthanized.  She instead plans to take Sweetie to a specialist to have her completely fixed up.

Ms. Stevens explains simply, "She's my baby and I love her."
