Post Office Dog Goes Postal on Thieves

Monday, August 6, 2001 - UK

ESSEX — For once, it looks like the mailman was happy to see an aggressive dog.

Who knows what would have happened had the feisty, little Jack Russell Terrier not been on the scene?  When armed robbers threatened the Rettendon postal staff with kitchen knives and wooden sticks last Friday, no one was quite sure what to do.

—that is, no one except for the Post Office's trusty, four-legged mascot.  The Jack Russell leaped into action and chased the criminals off before anyone was injured and before any substantial theft occurred.  The two robbers grabbed less than £20 cash on their panicked retreat and fled on a reddish-colored motorbike.

Police said that the two unidentified men were described as being in their late teens and wearing balaclavas (knit caps).

...Or maybe that's baklavas (traditional Greek pastries).  I think that would make a lot more sense, wouldn't it?  Go get 'em, boy.
