Police Pick Up Drunk, Disorderly Dog

Monday, August 27, 2001 - ISRAEL

"...a
sk of all that flees, all that sighs,
all that revolves, all that sings,
all that speaks, ask of these the hour;
and wind and wave and star and bird and timepiece will answer you:
'It is the hour to be drunken!' "

C. Baudelaire, Enivrez-vous

TEL AVIV — Israel Army radio recently reported a bizarre account of an intoxicated dog annoying the neighborhood with its loud "singing".

According to the report, Israeli police were investigating a complaint of an unusually loud barking emanating from an apartment flat in Tel Aviv when they found the inebriated canine source with a human drinking buddy in an equally sloshed condition.  After sobering up, the man explained the story to the authorities:

The dog was a stray which he had found in the street the night before.  After offering the wanderer some food and a bath, the man further extended his hospitality in offering his new best friend a glass of vodka.

Apparently they got to telling old war stories, and several more drinks were consumed.  Around sunrise, the dog decided to impress the man with a canine rendition of "How Dry I Am"
(or was it "Melancholy Baby"?)—thus leading to the commotion.

"No more, really!  I'm starting to smell double."

The man was released after questioning, while his four-footed friend was taken to a veterinary hospital where his condition was listed as "good".

Hangover remedy?  What else, but "hair of the dog".
