"Jock,
when ye hae naething else to do,
ye may be aye sticking in a tree."
—Sir
Walter Scott, The Heart of Midlothian
CORUNNA,
MI (USA) — At
9:50am Friday, Sep 21, a man entered the Fifth Third Bank at 2350 E. Main St.
and handed the teller a note demanding money. The man had indicated
that he was armed, according to a Corunna Police account issued
yesterday.
The
Flint Journal reports that the teller handed over an
undetermined amount of cash, after which the robber fled the bank with
the teller chasing him.
At a nearby parking lot, the robber got
into a getaway car and pulled out onto E. Main St. while a motorist who
had also witnessed the commotion joined in the chase. The motorist
followed the man to a dead-end street but backed off when the suspect
pointed a handgun at him, police said.
Corunna Police Chief Mark Hetfield
stated that a sheriff's deputy found the suspect's abandoned car in
the middle of M-71 between Lytle and Kerby roads and saw the man run
into the nearby woods. Police
from 15 area agencies, four canine units and a state police helicopter
spent about six hours looking for the suspect, reporting sporadic
sightings in a 4-square-mile area south of Corunna.

"Talon", a Shiawassee County
police dog, was finally able to pick up the scent from a road that the
suspect had crossed in fleeing to a neighboring wooded area. Talon
then led officers to a large tree where the man was seen clinging to a branch
40 feet up.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but
evading a dog by hiding in a tree has got to be second in stupidity only
to evading a dog by hiding on top of a fire hydrant. ...But my
guess is that any bank robber who is chased down the street by the bank
teller whom he had just held up isn't exactly what you'd call a
formidable criminal mastermind (see also "Dog
and Teen in Underwear Foil Bicycle Heist", April 1, 2001).
Police apprehended the suspect, a
37-year-old man from Saginaw, and charged him with armed robbery.
I guess you could say he was arrested at the scene of the climb.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
