KILDARE, IRELAND — Animal rescuers were astounded by the
resilience of an unidentified "rich reddish brown collie cross"
who survived an impact with a train on the Sallins railway line last
Friday morning. The dog, nicknamed "Tracker" by his
rescuers at the Kildare
SPCA, was removed from the rails by passengers while the KSPCA
was notified.
Says Kitty O’Brien, president of the
KSPCA, "Our vet arrived at the scene expecting to find a dead dog
and was astonished to find he was very much alive."

The KSPCA inspector involved in the
case tells The Scoop, "[The passengers] brought the dog and
met me half way. I took Tracker to Mahers, Doona & Spillan
Veterinary Clinic in Athy as I found he was unable to walk and was
suffering shock. We expected that Tracker's back would be broken
or at the least his hips shattered.
"He was treated for shock and next
day tested and X-rayed and we were stunned to find that Tracker was only
badly bruised and marked on the ribs where the train hit him."

Although his X-rays checked out,
Tracker was still a bit wobbly and not expected to walk for at least two
weeks. The KSPCA inspector decided to take him home during that
time for him to recuperate while she attempted to find his owners.
"Immediately he was brought into
the house he stood up and walked staggeringly toward the cooker where
some rashers were being fried and begged for food," she says.
Editor's note: And what
self-respecting dog wouldn't jump up after being hit by a train—when
offered some fried, flavorful, tender cure rashers?
...By the way, what's a rasher?
Now the KSPCA is focusing on locating
the dog's family. Says Ms. O’Brien,
"He has survived in the most unlikely circumstances and we would
love to help him find his home again. He has obviously been very
well cared for and we think he means a lot to someone."
