KILWORTHY, ON (Canada) — Yesterday an enormous
explosion leveled a restaurant, blew out all the windows on the building
across the street and damaged several passing cars, but miraculously, a
dog survived the blast with minor injuries.
At around 7:30am, the Grand
Restaurant on Highway 11 north of Toronto was reduced to rubble in
an explosion that was heard 20km away. According to today's Toronto
Star, insulation, two-by-fours and twisted pieces of
metal were firmly wedged high in the trees above where the 6,000 sq. ft.
restaurant had once stood. All that was left standing was
"Brute" and his doghouse.
"It's unbelievable that he
survived," said neighborhood resident Jeremy Tolton who was shaken
out of bed by the concussion. "I thought they had started
bombing Canada."
Despite the total devastation, nobody
was injured, according to the Ontario
Provincial Police report. Gravenhurst OPP Constable Mary
Hurley noted: "The explosion even damaged several vehicles that
were passing on the highway, so personally I'm surprised no one was hurt
and even the dog survived." |

Brute received a gash in his side and
is believed to have gone deaf from the blast. Restaurant owners
Ida and Al Serbinek arrived on the scene and tried to carry him across
the highway to safety, but the 60kg German Shepherd was too heavy.
They put him down and were surprised to see that he was able to walk
away on his own.
"He was okay, [but] they took him to the vet just in case,"
said Mr. Tolton who was at the scene.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's office, propane gas company crews and
electric company personnel have not yet determined the cause of the
explosion, but investigations are underway
