CPR Saves Pooch's Life

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (USA) — A New Year's Eve apartment blaze erupted in an East Park Avenue apartment Monday morning, gutting the first floor and sending tenants fleeing into the street.

Firefighters responded to an alarm around 5:19am and were able to subdue the flames within 10 minutes without any loss of human lives.  Upon searching the first-floor residence, they found the body of a small dog who had been overcome by smoke.

Emergency teams administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and were successful at reviving the canine, who is reportedly now in stable condition.

The fire, which caused $35,000 damage to the home of Julie Warden-Coffman, 53, and Kenneth Coffman, 55, was reported to have been caused by a cigarette that set the bedding ablaze.

The Coffmans insisted that they've been trying to get their dog to quit smoking in bed, and this is the last straw.

Ok, maybe they didn't really say that.

The couple is receiving temporary housing from the American Red Cross while the dog is recuperating at Animal Control.  Doggie get-well cards may be sent to:
