1 Frozen Hot Dog:
Dachshund Survives 38 Days in Sub-Zero

LYCKEBY, BLEKINGE LAN (Sweden) Surviving -20°C temperatures, severe malnutrition and wild lynx, "Onni" the Dachshund came home after 38 days lost in the Holmsjö forest.

The little, brown wiener dog shocked and delighted the Petersson family on Sunday when they found her in someone's garden in Åbyholm, north of the forest.

The Swedish newspaper Blekinge Läns Tidning reported

"Därför gav vi aldrig upp hoppet
[We never gave up hope]," says Nils-Eric.

yesterday that Onni was "haggard, so thin that ribs were showing and too tired to get off the couch by herself", but she's surprisingly healthy considering that she had been alone in the freezing wilderness since Nov. 29 when she disappeared from a hunting expedition with Nils-Eric Petersson.

Editor's note: Ok, Wags... Onni has a valid excuse for not getting up off the couch.  What's yours, lazybones?

Then last weekend, a phone call came from a man who claimed that he was looking at a little, brown Dachsund sitting in his garden.  The Peterssons drove to the location and found Onni at the brink of death.

"My wife and I drove up directly, and there sat Onni," said Mr. Petersson.  "She was absolutely at an end, low down and just glancing at us."

Mr. Petersson and Maja, his wife, told reporters that they never gave up hope, taking out several ads in local papers, driving up to the forest each day to search.

Our senior Editor "Wags" is a constant reminder of the old adage: "If you want the most comfortable spot in the house, move the dog."

It remains a mystery how she managed to stay alive.  According to the Swedish newspaper, it is possible that Onni survived by eating spillning och mat från fågelbord.

They even laid badger traps baited with Maja Petersson's fleece coat, in the hopes that Onni would recognize the scent.

Phone calls came from Fågelmara to Sällemåla, claiming "Onni sightings" which the couple would immediately investigate but with no success.

Christmas and the New Year holiday passed, and the Petersson household remained broken-hearted and totally devoid of julstämning ("yuletide spirit" ...or maybe that's "eggnog"—my Swedish is a little rusty).

Your guess is as good as mine as to whatever that is.  But I'm betting it's not nearly as good as yams and cranberry sauce.
