"What counts is not necessarily the size of
the dog in the fight; it's the size of the fight in the dog."
Dwight
D. Eisenhower (1890-1969),
34th President of the United States
ATHERTON (UK)
— Yesterday, the Manchester
Evening News reported on a bungled burglary attempt at The
Albion pub which could easily have turned deadly, if not for a pint-sized
pooch named "Foxy".
At just after midnight, after closing,
pub manager Jeff Bellis answered a knock at the door and was confronted by
a man wearing a black hood and carrying what looked like a shotgun.
Mr. Bellis describes: "When the door went, I thought it was one of the staff coming back for
something, but when I opened it, there was this man with a gun. He was wearing a black balaclava over his face and was trying to
push his way in.
"My girlfriend Rena was in the pub at the time so I started shouting
and tried to close the door, but he kept pushing.
"I think it was because I was shouting that Foxy realized something
was wrong. He started barking and the hair on his back went up.
The guy
just ran off." Foxy, a 10-inch-tall Jack Russell Terrier saved the
day with his larger-than-life bark. "It wasn't just any old
bark," explains Mr. Bellis. "Foxy was really standing his
ground and I think that's what scared the bloke off."

away," says a proud Mr. Bellis, pictured here with the little

"Foxy barks at anybody he doesn't know and always follows me around to
see what is going on. But he is well-liked by all the regular
customers and has been really mollycoddled since it happened."
And so ends the case of a dog whose bark is worse than his bite.
Or who knows? Little Foxy never got the chance to impress the world
with his ferocious needle teeth. We'll leave that for the next
unwitting thief to find out.
