Online reports that on Saturday an alleged thief was taken into
custody after leading store owners, security guards, traffic cops, city
police, public citizens, a dog and a horse on a merry chase through the
streets near St. George's Mall in Cape Town.
According to reports, a 20-year-old man
tried on a pair of rollerblades in the first floor shop of Jack Lemkus
Sports, waited for staff to assist other customers and bolted down the
stairs, setting off an alarm. Store employees pursued the man and
called for help as the chase took to the streets.
"The guy was really fast," describes store manager Nick
Glover.
A security dog then picked up the trail, accompanied by other Nedbank
security officers. The pursuit quickly escalated as bystanders
joined in and law enforcement officials arrived.

Still the fugitive managed to stay ahead of the mob for several blocks
until finally, someone with a bit more horsepower stepped in: a mounted
Gray Security officer.
The fugitive was apprehended, the
rollerblades were recovered and he was taken to Caledon Square police
station, where he was charged.
Says Mr. Glover: "But for the guard on horseback, we never would
have caught him on foot."
