Slightly Confused Labrador Adopts Kitty Litter

"I had rather be a kitten and cry mew"

King Henry IV Part I
Act iii. Sc. 1

BALLYGLUNIN (UK) — Late last month, a maternally-inclined dog was honored as one of the 2001 Pets of the Year for adopting a litter of five needy kittens.

The Irish Independent reports that "Shadow", a West of Ireland Labrador, took on the task of

raising a group of orphaned cats at the home of Tracy Robertson in Ballyglunin after their mother had been killed by an automobile.

Says Ms. Robertson: "In this house the cats behave like dogs and the dogs behave like cats."

After the three-month-old kittens were left motherless last year, Shadow wasted no time in assuming the unusual role.  Ms. Robertson explains: "Shadow is a big softie with an even bigger heart.

"When the kittens' mother was run over by the car, Shadow immediately noticed her absence and began to take care of them.

"The kittens slept with her, were cleaned by her, and she carefully supervised their play time.

"They totally took over Shadow's bed at night-time and spent the whole day pulling and tugging out of her, and they even tried to feed from her. But she didn't mind at all. In fact, she thoroughly enjoyed it and put up with all their antics."

Two weeks ago, Shadow was given an award by Whiskas, Pedigree and Veterinary Ireland.  Along with the honor, she received a doggie pamper-hamper full of toys, a grooming brush and tins of luxury dog food.
