Pawsitively Patriotic Dogs! (Pictures of  Mardi Paws, Part I)

"Laissez les bone temps rouler!"

Denise Gutnisky, President
Have a Heart thru Art

NEW ORLEANS, LA (USA) — They came in all colors, shapes  and sizes, and it made no difference if they were of nth-generation pedigree or a mystery-mutt who had been rescued from a ditch a few months ago.  All dogs had a chance to shine at this year's offbeat Mardi Gras celebration, the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws 2002 parade at Mandeville Harbor this week.

Dreamed up by animal-lover Denise Gutnisky and first held in the neighborhood of Bocage Lane

Who do you think does a better General Patton:
George C. Scott or "Dudley" the Boxer?

in 1995, the canine carnival parade found immediate success and has been ballooning in size and popularity each year since.  In 1999, the celebration moved to the lakefront and became a fund-raiser for Have a Heart thru Art and local animal welfare groups.  On Monday, the furry festivities featured over 400 proud, prancing pooches, dressed to this year's theme "PAWSitively Patriotic".

Love in the air: "Ginger" was eager to meet "King Cody" the famous WTC rescue dog —which she did, presenting him with an enormous, red Valentine bone.  In a swoon, she was carried off by John Malone of Ponchatoula.  "...Ah have always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Would you believe U.S. President George W. Bush (or a convincing facsimile thereof) made an appearance and brought along with him about half a dozen "Barneys" in tow?

They say a leopard cannot change its spots, but these three Dalmatians managed to change theirs — into stars and stripes.  Red, white and blue are definitely "in vogue" this season.

Whose broad stripes and bright paws...?
These two pups were "bursting in air" at all the excitement as they rode along in their own flag-adorned float called—what else?—
the "Star Spaniel Banner".

Now Meet the King & Queen!
