BOCA RATON, FL — You may have heard it
before: "When a dog bites a man,
that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a man bites a
dog, that is news." Well, here's one from The Scoop:
"When a loyal dog saves a man, that is not news, because it happens
so often. But if a loyal man saves a dog, that is news!"
Last Monday, Florida's WPLG
10 reported that Hank Schiffer did exactly that.
Mr. Schiffer and his two dogs from South
Florida were
driving near a construction site in Boca Raton where streets had been
flooded due to a broken water main. Believing the flooding to be
minor, Mr. Schiffer proceeded to drive his van onward, not knowing that
they were headed straight for a huge sink hole.
The van was quickly swallowed up and
submerged in the water. Though the man was able to push his door
open to escape the sinking vehicle, his dogs were not quite as adept (see
related article: "Dog
Escaped by Rolling Down Car Window"). The two large
pooches remained trapped.
Workers who had been repairing the
damaged water main came to the scene and began yelling at Mr. Schiffer to
get out of the car, but instead the man went back for his dogs.
"He would not leave the van because his two dogs were inside,"
reported Channel 10.

As if it weren't hard enough to get a dog
to come out of the car in the first place, Mr. Schiffer had a flood to
deal with, too.

After a brief struggle, Mr. Schiffer was
able to pull both dogs out of the van, and all three of them swam to
safety.
Shaken up and perhaps a bit embarrassed,
Mr. Schiffer admitted to reporters, "People were telling me not to go
through the high water, but I just ignored what they were saying. I
guess that was wrong."
His dogs were quick to defend him,
saying: "The
water didn't look that deep. After all, it only reached the tops of
the ducks' legs."
(Well, maybe they didn't exactly say
that.)
