| CARDIFF
(Wales) —
It sounds like a terrible insult:
"Your guard dog is so lazy, when
someone breaks in, he calls the cops!"
Well, for whatever reason,
"Toby" the tiny Jack Russell Terrier didn't particularly feel
like tangling with burglars himself, so he did the next best thing; he
alerted emergency personnel.
Ananova
Ltd. reports that Tony Fox, a 74-year-old, retired business
adviser, was not at home when his property was burglarized last week at
lunch time. However, when Mr. Fox did return to his house in
Cardiff, he was surprised to find a rescue paramedic playing with Toby in
the living room. Apparently, the ingenious pooch had activated an
alarm that was connected to the phone line, thereby notifying authorities
and summoning the rescuer.
"[The paramedic] had answered the
emergency call to the house," explains Mr. Fox. "He got
here and searched everywhere but couldn't find anyone. He was just
trying to work out what had happened when I returned."
"I arrived back from lunch and saw
that the front door was open," Mr. Fox describes. "I
hurried to the house because I knew something was up and found a paramedic
playing with Toby in the living room."

Only later, as he saw the paramedic to
the door, Mr. Fox noticed that a stone statuette had been stolen from the
yard.
He believes that Toby had detected the intruder(s) and knew how to
operate the emergency button, having seen Mr. Fox use it before.
"Toby is a very good guard dog and obviously very clever," he
adds.
Perhaps it's not exactly what they teach in guard dog school, but you
have to give Toby an "A" for original thinking.

"It's
for you again."
Titch
is a 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier at the National
Canine Defence League, Merseyside Rehoming Centre in
Liverpool. The centre describes him as being well trained, although
we're not sure if he knows how to handle a phone as well as Toby. Click on Titch's picture to meet him, or browse through hundreds of other
adoptable dogs at ncdl.org.uk.
