HONOLULU,
HI (USA) — Never mind the fact that we've been mispronouncing the word "Forgea"
all month (see
Apr. 27); but now we find out that it's not even the poor dog's name.
"Forgea's name is really pronounced 'Hok Get' in Taiwanese,
meaning happiness, good fortune, blessing—all
that is good," Captain Chung Chin-po of the shipwrecked tanker Insiko
1907 wrote in a letter. "Forgea" is the
Mandarin (Chinese) translation.
Well, whatever she's
called, the amazing white dog set paw on dry land for the
first time in two months this morning. At 8:30am, members of the
press were invited to Honolulu Harbor's pier 24 for the arrival of the
American Quest, Insiko 1907 and the debut appearance of the
internationally-famous mutt HokGet who made it all happen.

The snout that launched a thousand ships
...ok, maybe half a dozen, but that's pretty good for a dog. The
seafaring survivor "HokGet" was carried to shore by Humane
Society veterinarian Dr. Becky Rhoades. (Photo: Star-Bulletin)
