May 12, 2002 MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL:
Mutt's Mom's a Monkey

"I learned the way a monkey
learns—by watching its parents."

Prince of Wales

DHAKA (Bangladesh) —
A mother's love is universal and, as the case may be, heterogeneous.
At a shop in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, a female monkey
has adopted a young puppy, according to Reuters.
"The pet monkey, bought from an animal trader, 'adopted' the
puppy recently and spends many hours hugging it," reported the
news service on Thursday.
Evidently, the pup suffers no identity crisis and is equally happy
to accept and reciprocate the affection of its pseudo-parent this
Mother's Day.

Charles Darwin (1809–1882), who proposed the modern theory of
human ancestry, once wrote:
"For
my own part, I would as soon be descended from that heroic little
monkey ... or that old baboon ... as from a savage who delights to
torture his enemies, offers up bloody sacrifices, practices
infanticide without remorse, treats his wives like slaves, knows no
decency, and is haunted by the grossest superstitions."
|
That may be a rather harsh way of saying "Happy
Mother's Day. Thanks for being there, mom", but I think that's
pretty much what this pooch is saying with a wag of the tail.
