"A kitten is a thing apart; and many
people who lack the discriminating enthusiasm for cats, who regard
these beautiful beasts with aversion and mistrust, are won over
easily, and cajoled out of their prejudices, by the deceitful wiles of
kittenhood."

But everybody loves a kitten.
Last week, a two-year-old Chihuahua helped drive that point home
at the Animal
Foundation of Nevada by adopting a fresh litter of motherless
kitties after she herself gave birth to stillborn puppies. On
May 2, the Las Vegas Sun ran the story of "Daisy"
and her meowing brood, prompting a flood of interest at the shelter.
"We are thrilled by this recognition because this little dog
has brought so much attention to the need for foster care of
kittens," said Animal Foundation director Mary Herro. "The
day after the Sun ran the story we got 45 kittens into new
foster (temporary) homes."

Shelter manager Stacy Herro described how it all happened:
"I was hand-feeding four kittens that had been brought to the shelter
by Animal Control after the mother cat could not be found. Daisy
started whimpering as she watched me ... She picked each one up by the
neck and carried them to her box. After a while, they began nursing
and she let them do it."
The four Siamese kittens, "Violet Lily",
"Tumbleweed", "Cactus Jack" and "Stinkweed",
will go to new homes as soon as they are old enough.
And then maybe Stinkweed can finally requisition a name
change.
