LAC DU BONNET, Man. (Canada) — Well,
ok... but if it wasn't x-ray vision, then you tell me how that dog
knew what was going on next door.
"Big Ben", a nine-year-old Newfoundland dog has been
credited with saving the life of a neighbor by running to the man's
porch and whining at the door to draw attention to a life-threatening
situation. Inside, 54-year-old Les Carlson, who lives alone, had
slipped into diabetic shock and was critically in need of assistance.
The Winnipeg
Sun reports that early Monday evening, Big Ben, who
seldom leaves the side of his guardian Eleanor Hladki, suddenly ran
off whining.
"All of a sudden I could hear Benny crying,” said Ms. Hladki.
“He was on Les’s deck. I went over to look at him and I
thought (Benny) was sick because he is getting on. But he was
just crying and looking at Les’s door."
Ms. Hladki told reporters that she went inside and found Mr.
Carlson lying unresponsive on the couch with his eyes glazed
over. An ambulance was summoned, and the man was rushed to the
hospital where, after 24 hours, he was released in good condition.
Mr. Carlson said if it weren’t for Big Ben, "I wouldn’t be
here talking about it right now."
No one is able to explain how Big Ben sensed the man's dire
condition. Although it has been extensively documented that dogs
can detect low blood sugar in humans, researchers have yet to fully understand the phenomenon (read The Scoop April 14: "Listen
to Your Dogtor").

Look up in the sky! It's a bird-dog! It's a
pooch! It's...
"Hope", a very playful 10-week old Newfoundland / Lab /
Terrier puppy at the Pet
Over Population Prevention shelter in Benton City, Wash.
(USA). She might not have X-ray vision, but I'm willing to bet that
she can leap tall coffee-tables in a single bound.
