Not Exactly the Brightest Police Dog in the World Walks Off Rooftop (but gets an "A" for effort)

VANCOUVER, B.C. (Canada) — Meet "Stat".  He understands English as well as Czech.  He's an expert in narcotics and weapon detection.  If you're buried in an avalanche, Stat is your best hope.  The only problem with Stat is that he occasionally falls off roofs.

The North Shore News reports that on Monday, Stat walked over the edge of the 2-story roof of Lynn Valley Centre shopping mall and was injured while attempting to follow a suspected burglar.

Fortunately for the two-year-old, 72-pound (32kg) German Shepherd, an awning broke his fall, and he escaped the incident with only a broken tooth.

"Luckily it was not an important tooth like an incisor," says Constable Marina Wilks, spokesperson for the RCMP North Vancouver.  "His bark is still going to have some bite."

Const. Wilks explains that Stat was hot on the trail of an attempted burglary suspect at 2:35am.  Stat's partner, Constable Richard Gingras, released the dog in order to track the suspect, believed hiding in the dark.  Stat became so engrossed in sniffing the suspect's trail that he followed it right over the edge of the roof (I guess you could say that the dog had more scents than sense).

"Dogs get so focused on following a scent that they assume anywhere a human can go they can," says Const. Wilks. "We believe the bad guy climbed down somehow."

Stat is currently laid up at his partner's home in Squamish where he will stay for about two weeks recuperating.  Stat's K-9 co-workers Checkers, Chase and Baron will continue to respond to the 600-some calls per year that require the expert talents of police dog/handler teams in North Vancouver.

In the meantime, the famous flying police dog will have plenty of time to rest and watch TV.  According to the RCMP, Stat's favorite programs are Lassie and The Littlest Hobo.

That's funny.  I would have guessed that he's a big fan of Dynomutt...
