The Scoop on Sports
The Famous San Francisco Giants' 4 legged team!
[Part 1]  [Part 2]

Editor's note: Scoop correspondent Kathy Ryan is here once again with a follow-up to the San Francisco Giants' ball fetching team article, "It Take a Thief...and it Wasn't Rio!" (you'll lap it up)! Thanks, Kathy, for showing us that human greed should never go up to bat against a few water dogs and a group of folks on a great mission.

SAN FRANCISCO, Cal. (USA) — The SF Giants baseball team recently made it to the playoffs, so Rio and the rest of the B.A.R.K. 4-legged fly-ball catching team went out to the Cove one last time for the season to catch the coveted and valuable Barry Bonds grand slam baseballs.

However, the B.A.R.K. team soon found that fierce competition would not be confined to the baseball arena: they would have to contend with the infamous kayaking fly-ball thief, Eugene Pointer once again!

Robert Higa, human member and defender of the B.A.R.K. 4-legged fly-ball catching team, was quoted as saying:

“Eugene Pointer was back in the Cove on Saturday. I got a couple of photos of him. When he realized who we were and saw my camera, he pulled his hat down and hid his face, and paddled off...

"I kept my boat positioned right in front of his kayak whenever Bonds was at bat for the rest of the game."

Meet the B.A.R.K. team!

The B.A.R.K. water dog team inevitably kept all snouts on the ball during the entire game so that Mr. Pointer wouldn't stand a chance at retrieving any fly balls. By the end of the game, the dogs had scooped up four batting practice splash hits while Pointer had just scooped up water.

That might be better than scooping up after the dog has eaten carrot-peanut butter jubilee (unless, of course, there's a Bonds ball in the mix), but not much better!

On September 29 (the final Sunday of the Season for the dogs) Mr. Higa and the B.A.R.K. dog squad, members of the Pets In Need non-profit animal welfare & adoption society, and Scoop correspondent Kathy Ryan were all invited to go down on to the field during the game to be honored by the SF Giants:

Mario Allioto of the SF Giants gives Pets In Need a $5,000
check for the year…an annual donation from the team.

Stacie Snow, wife of 1st baseman J.T. Snow of the SF Giants, and
Kathy Ryan are on the field for the presentation. Stacie is holding
the dog she and JT adopted from Pets In Need, Eliza Doolittle.
