Doggy 'driving lesson' ends in mishap

Pooch takes the wheel. Woman works the pedals. Car crashes.

HOHHOT (China)
August 29, 2006

"A good dog does not block the road."
Chinese Proverb

A woman from Hohhot, Inner Mongolia's capital city, told authorities that she was teaching her dog how to drive when the pooch swerved into an oncoming car, causing minor damage to both vehicles.

Yesterday the Xinhua News Agency reported that the woman, indentified as Ms. Li, was operating the accelerator and brake whilst her dog steered. Ms. Li explained that the dog had often watched her drive and was fond of crouching on the steering wheel, so she felt it was time to let the dog "have a try".

No injuries were reported, and Ms. Li agreed to pay for all damages.

Folks, let this be a lesson to you. When teaching your dog how to drive, you might want to start with the written exam first.

HOW MUCH IS THAT DOGGY IN THE DASHBOARD?

At the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda introduced a car built specifically for dogs. The "Honda WOW" features a driver-side dog bed, seats that transform into a crate, advanced ventilation, removable (washable) flooring and a center walk-through so dogs can run around and play with tennis balls while you're driving.

(Special canine seat belts secure your pooch to the floor so that no one is injured when that tennis ball rolls under the brake pedal, causing you to wreck into a pole.)

Honda says the WOW was designed to meet the increasing demand for dog-friendly cars in Japan where 20% of all households have a pooch (and 100% of all pooches want a car ride).
