Remember Scott Shields? Bear Search and Rescue?
He was just arrested and indicted in Federal court for 9/11 related fraud.
FINALLY, AFTER ALMOST 6 YEARS, SCOTT MAY BE GOING TO JAIL
« on: Yesterday at 12:13:22 pm »
9/11 'HERO' CHARGED IN 40G SCAM
By BRAD HAMILTON and GINGER OTIS, New York Post
July 15, 2007 -- A self-proclaimed Ground Zero hero who says he and his golden retriever rescued victims from the World Trace Center rubble has been charged with fraud for allegedly ripping off $40,000 in federal relief funds.
Scott Shields could face up to 35 years in jail after a Manhattan grand jury indicted him and his sister last month for allegedly swiping rental-assistance money from FEMA and other agencies.
Shields showed up in the days after the attack, accompanied by Bear, his cancer-stricken canine, but the dog was too sick to do any real work, and the two were on hand only for "a couple of days," according to a former NYPD officer.
"There's something wrong with the guy," said Lt. Dan Denadio, who as head of the NYPD's K-9 unit spent nine months at Ground Zero. "I don't know how he got so far."
Shields claims he and Bear "made the only live finds" at the site.
"Nonsense," Denadio said.
After his brief stint on the pile, Shields, who had resided in Greenwich, Conn., moved into an apartment across from the site - a swanky $3,182-a-month pad on Rector Place - and got one check for $16,443.50 from FEMA to pay for it, records show.
Shields collected thousands in additional rental assistance, the indictment says.

Captain Scott Shields is a total fraud, please dont send any money to his foundation. Please dont believe any of his stories, they are all fabrications.
He was not at Oklahoma, he was not at SAGO, he was not in middle east, he was at WTC and Katrina but walked around giving press statements and looking important. He never saved anyone and his dog saves Tennis Balls and nothing else.
Lets see what happens to him after 5th November.

Scott Shields has been manufacturing fake heroic tales about himself for years saying his dog made live finds and found the most victims at the WTC. He fooled a lot of smart people and got a lot of awards and $$$'s. It's about time the FEDS got in on the act and plan to prosecute him. I hope the trial is soon because he's still trolling New Jersey streets looking for handouts for his foundation. Let's hope the government shuts this cash cow foundation down too. Congrats to Dogs in the News for staying on top of this scammer! Woof woof!

Scott Shield's Book - Bear Heart of a Hero - here are the comments from the co-author who now dismisses his claims.
AUTHOR'S COMMENTS - NANCY WEST, February 12, 2006
By Nancy West (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There have been many erroneous facts, as well as misleading information presented in news and television articles about Scott Shields and his dogs Bear and Theodore. I hope the following helps both readers and the media who may be interested in gaining greater knowledge of the facts of this story:
1.) Scott Shields did NOT "command" search and rescue teams at the WTC. As discussed in the book, Scott was asked to escort a team from Massachusettes onto the pile during the evening of 9/11. Scott responded to 911 as an independent citizen volunteer. Like other citizen volunteers, Scott and Bear were requested to leave the search efforts after several days.
2.)Scott refers to himself as 'Captain' because that is what others called him for many years on the waterfront in New York and Connecticut. This does NOT refer to any military, maritime, or authoritative rank.
3.) Scott has some emergency management training, but he and Bear did NOT have "official" or "professional" search and rescue (SAR) training.
4.) Bear did NOT accompany Scott to the WTC to do search work. He was there because he was always at Scott's side.
5.) Bear has NOT been credited with making any live finds at the WTC.
6.) Bear has NOT been credited with finding more victims than any other rescuer or canine. The number of victims Bear found has NEVER been established. Many highly trained, official search and rescue canine teams stayed and worked for weeks after Scott and Bear left. Presumably, these teams made many sad discoveries.
7.) Scott and Bear did NOT respond to the Oklahoma City bombing rescue and recovery mission.
8.) Scott and Bear did NOT respond to the earthquake in Turkey.
9.) Theodorable is NOT Bear's son. Theodore was purchased by two of Scott's close friends from a kennel near Princeton, NJ during the autumn of 2002. Theo was approximately six months old when he was adopted. At this time, Theodore is NOT a trained search and rescue dog.
10.)Theodore has been made an honorary 'mascot' in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He is NOT a Coast Guard SAR canine.
I hope this has helped. Happy reading!

You all need to look at www.scottshieldsfraud.co.uk - bankrupcies, charges and a whole lot more.
See what the people who know the truth are saying - man it will blow your mind.
However he is still saying he is innocent.
Trial will be mid January 08.

Has anyone heard the outcome of this trial? I was scammed. I purchased t shirts and a book (never received the book) because I heard the fund raising speech.I had my picture taken with him and his dog. I can't believe someone would do something like this. I am embarassed I am usually a good judge of character but still was taken. I heard the story how bear found the most bodies, was the first dog at WTC, I got pictures of theo and was also told that theo is the son of bear. Theo was not vicious or aggressive as being stated earlier. I hope the government takes some steps to see that people like this do not slip through the cracks to take innocent people for a ride. I do know though I did have a strange unsettling feeling about him when I purchased the shirts and it took weeks to send them 20 minutes to my house. Even some of the emails he sent about WTC and Katrina just didn't seem completely factual. I live about 20minutes from him. I am anxious to see the outcome of this trial.
